After working in the poultry industry for 41 years, JSE-listed integrated poultry producer Astral Foods CEO and executive director Chris Schutte has announced his retirement, effective January 30, 2025.

The company has started with a formal process to identify and appoint a new CEO.

Having led Astral for 16 years, Schutte is recognised as the longest-serving CEO of a JSE-listed company in South Africa.

He will continue to provide support on a consultant basis to Astral for one year following his retirement.

Astral nonexecutive chairperson Dr Theuns Eloff says Schutte was instrumental in helping the company to recover from what had been its worst financial period in history in the year ended September 30, 2023, on the back of an Avian influenza outbreak and loadshedding.

Schutte is confident that he is handing over the helm to a confident team who is willing and able to take the Astral group forward in the next phase of its growth journey.
